Performing "Swing" at Durango Songwriter's Expo 2017
The first song I ever wrote, "Life Is The Pits", I debuted in front of my 6th grade class accompanying myself on Mrs. Parra's Wurlitzer: "Life is the pits / Life is a bore / Gonna throw away the old life / And open a new door". Not much has changed. In one of my most recent songs, "Swing", I sing: "Life tries to pull me under / But I'm untied from that string / I never lost my sense of wonder / When I get pushed / The better I swing". Don't get me wrong. I love life. In fact, I can't live without it! But we all face a struggle and without it most music would never have been written. For my 12 year old self it was my first tragedy: parental separation. Yeah. My life did suck there for awhile. But the muse came to my rescue and it was through songwriting that I was able to experience catharsis.
I owe much of my development as a musician (and a man) to my best friend and cousin Clayton Colwell. Without a doubt, he is the rock to my roll. Since kids, together we have written and recorded scores of songs and traveled the world in various bands. Our adventure continues as Colwell. Curious how we got the name? Click here to find out.
Hector On Stilts
Before we were Colwell (we've always been Colwells) we were Hector On Stilts, a pop band with a rotating roster of musicians. Listen to the HOS album Same Height Relation here.
In October of 2014 I visited Cuba on a humanitarian mission, a privilege made possible by my involvement in the writing and singing of a song for Viva La Gente. Visit my Soundcloud page to hear "Cuba en mi corazon."
